The Michele Taruffo Girona Evidence Week held from 2–6 June 2025 in Girona, is the premier tri‑annual forum for evidence scholars and practitioners. Named in honour of the late Professor Michele Taruffo, the congress attracts over 500 attendees worldwide, featuring a blend of plenary lectures, panel discussions, and intense thematic workshops.
ALF Coordinaror Bojan Spaić delivered a thought‑provoking talk titled “Does It Make Sense to Speak about Legal Truth?” as part of the “Correspondence and Beyond: New Approaches to Truth in Law and Evidence” workshop, organized by Elena Marchese (Bocconi University) and Michele Ubertone (Maastricht University). This workshop convened leading scholars from across Europe to examine how evolving theories of truth interface with legal practices. Spaic’s presentation took place on Friday, 6 June on the Faculty of Law University of Girona.
Spaić challenged simplistic readings of legal truth grounded solely in classical correspondence theories. He argued that the legal concept of truth uniquely blends factual accuracy with normative thresholds—like the requisite “beyond reasonable doubt” standard. Highlighted the dual role of legal truth as an epistemic tool—for fact‑finding—and a normative ideal—serving judicial purpose and institutional legitimacy.
Spaic proposed a pluralistic approach: legal truth is neither purely ontological nor solely pragmatic.
The session sparked lively discussion, and included contributions from Luca Pressacco on forensic metrology, Alessia Farano on lie/memory detection, and Bartłomiej Kucharzyk on judges’ handling of expert testimony.
